Aretha Franklin Makes Fellow Divas Bring Their A-Game In ‘Natural Woman’ Sing-a-Long
As fans still mourn the loss of the “Queen of Soul” and gospel legend Aretha Franklin, millions of devoted fans are reminiscing about her most memorable performances. One is particular is from the 1998 VH1 diva special that featured multiple generations of legendary vocalists who sang Franklin’s hit “Natural Woman.” The stellar line-up included Celine Dion, Carole King (co-writer of ”Natural Woman”), Gloria Estefan, and Shania Twain.
While each singer had her moment to shine via a solo or duet, the grand finale of “Natural Woman” had a lot of the divas competing to hit the most powerhouse notes. Dion was first up to follow the icon, Franklin, who ended up singing her line. However, King pointed out how Dion handled the “impromptu riff-off” with grace.” (It was Aretha after all!)
“Here we are on a stage of divas and Aretha is, as she would tend to do God bless her, sort of taking over,” King said during an earlier A&E special.“When Aretha sang the line Celine was supposed to do, Celine just got right up under her and answered her.” When you’re onstage with the Queen, you better bring your A game.
