Watch Tina Turner Set The Stage On Fire In These “Proud Mary” Flashback Performances
Tina Turner was the true star of the Ike and Tina Turner Revue and that was never more evident than her searing performance of the Creedence Clearwater Revival tune “Proud Mary.” The song is a rock and roll standard and Tina’s smoking; effortless vocals are what makes it so timeless.
According to her autobiography “I Tina,” Turner heard the song while on tour with the band and suggested to Ike Turner that the band should cover it. Instead of the country-based version made popular by Creedence, the Revue took the tune and transformed it into a sexy, blues rock smash.
Tina and Ike recorded “Proud Mary” for their album “Workin’ Together.” It became an instant classic. Putting the song over the top was the visual of Tina’s choreography with the Ikettes. Turner was at her vocal peak during this performance, widely considered one of the best rock tunes ever recorded.
